Microgaming and the Kentucky kerfuffle – Online Bingo News

November 11, 2008

Microgaming is one of the leading online gaming software providers  in the world for casino, poker and online bingo games, yet the recent crackdown in the US state of Kentucky means that their domain name, www.microgaming.com, is under threat, along with 140 other domains.

Many conflicting reports have appeared over the last few days, saying that the Microgaming domain has been seized, that Microgaming bingo sites are pulling out of the US, or simply not allowing any new bingo online player registrations from Kentucky. Players have also reported that access to Microgaming sites is now also restricted from neighbouring US states including Nevada, Tennessee and Georgia.

Speculation is rife over the Microgaming situation and as no clear statement has yet been issued by the company, many casino and online bingo players are increasingly worried about the safety of their deposited funds, especially if Microgaming decides to completely withdraw from the US market to avoid any further such problems.

Reports say that Microgaming will be issuing a statement sometime today which should hopefully bring some clarification to the issue.

Bingo Quite The Workout

November 11, 2008

The only time you’re ever really active is when you’re leaping to your feet, raising your arms in the air and yelling “Bingo!” when you win. The point is, when you think of playing bingo you don’t generally associate it with getting a workouts.

But evidently somebody down at Mecca Bingo, in Moor Lane, Bolton, has been thinking about how much sitting down their regular players do, because in a recent evening session all of the people present were put through an exercise routine, the aim apparently being to stimulate players bodies as well as their minds.

The Mecca general manager, Dave Barker, said: “We’ve always known playing bingo keeps minds active and now we can help to keep our players’ bodies active too.”

This was the scene on Wednesday night. Will Clarke, the Memberships Manager, took to the stage during the evening’s proceedings and asked for everyone’s attention. After a brief explanation, he led the assembled players through a short workout session before the bingo playing recommenced.

It was pretty spur of the moment, and nothing terribly strenuous. The players, mostly women, were asked to use their handbags as gym weights while Clarke led them through several exercises. They stretched, and raised the weights above their heads, and then to each side, all from the comfort of their seats.

Surprisingly, it went down a storm. Clarke said afterwards, “I think people were a bit nervous at first but then actually really enjoyed it.

In fact, the experiment was so successful that the management at Mecca Bingo are considering incorporating the improvised exercise routine into their regular schedule for the evening’s entertainment. Many of their players are elderly and play at Mecca Bingo at least twice a week, so the workout will ensure they get some health benefits to go along with the fun they’re having.

Feedback from those present on the night has been unanimously positive. 67 year old Rhona Raines, a regular at Mecca Bingo, is reported to have said, “You can get rid of your bingo wings while you play bingo, I think it’s a great idea.”

The belief of gaming is not a new and stream duration in the world. In statement, gaming has long existed for almost 2,000 being. Of course the property at stake back then were not money. Just like the other industries, gaming also underwent a lot of changes and now, in the world of computers, virtual gaming seems to be its newest form. Let us clean first the duration virtual. Bermuda considers Internet gambling

November 5, 2008

Normally, I would probably post this in the Politics forum, but since the election would probably swamp any discussion of this topic, I figured I’d drop it here in the Gaming forum.

Anyway… Holy Crap! Bermuda is actually considering getting into the online gambling industry!

According to the Royal Gazette – and isn’t it awesome that Bermuda has a paper called the Royal Gazette? – the small island “is currently assessing its suitability as a centre of Internet gaming, following a path taken by rival jurisdictions including Antigua and Barbuda and Costa Rica.”

According to the article, “Internet gaming is one of a series of possibilities, including casinos and a national lottery, being looked at in the $300,000 feasibility study.

This is fantastic for a lot of reasons.

First, this makes perfect sense for a small island nation/territory such as Bermuda. With only 65,000 people and a land area smaller than Manhattan island, Bermuda derives most of its revenues from international banking and tourism. In that respect, things have been going pretty well, as Wikipedia notes that Bemuda had the world’s highest GDP per capita in 2005.

However, which two industries do you think are going to be devastated the most by the looming global recession? Uhhhh, how about international banking and tourism?

So, right away, Bermuda has a major reason to embrace online gambling.

Secondly, for all of its image as a stodgy British colony, Bermuda is actually a fairly vibrant and progressive place. The influx of money and tourists over the years, along with a relatively small population has allowed the island to maintain a certain balance of wealth, prosperity and education across the entire population. They even have their own stock exchange, which hosts the world’s largest fully electronic offshore securities market. They know financial regulations and rules.

Thirdly, as the oldest and most populous remaining British territory, it has a world-class legal system.

Finally, it’s a tax haven. Need I say more?

I will.

I have been to Bermuda, and the place is a paradise. Picture your typical lush Caribbean island, and then picture it without it having been ravaged by years of environmental mismanagement. Now you’ve got an idea of Bermuda. It’s like they figured something out and managed to keep the place beautiful even while they embraced tourism and commerce.

In short, this is NOT a third-world nation. If I could convince my wife, I would have already moved there, but I digress.

If Bermuda gets into online gambling, you can reasonably expect that they will do it correctly, and as an already existing offshore financial center, you can imagine that companies based in Bermuda would not have too much trouble arranging payment processing.

In fact, if Bermuda were already in the industry, I would expect that virtually every reputable online gaming company would already have moved its head office, if not the entire operations, to Bermuda.

The only question is whether they are getting into it too late.

With the Democrats on the cusp of regaining the White House, and a recession looming, it’s not silly to imagine America flip-flopping and embracing online gambling – and its associated revenues – as early as 2009.

On top of that, there have been rumblings out of Canada about a desire to legalize and regulate online gambling up here too, and soon.

Still, I love the idea of Bermuda being host to online gaming companies. Not only is it a great fit, but at only a two hour flight from the Eastern seaboard, it’s a great excuse to visit more often.

Government Loses Secrecy Of Online Gambling Money Laundering Case

November 5, 2008

The United States government has been relatively quiet on the Internet gambling front since they passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. While legislators scurry around trying to figure out how to enforce the ill advised Bill, the federal government has been busy watching the online industry.

It has been reported by City Paper that two men with associations to the online gambling giant, Bodog, have had money laundering charges filed against them. Outside of the charges themselves, little more is known about the case.

There is no court date set for the case, nor are either of the accused, Michael Garone or Edward Courdy, being held on the charges.

That may be just how the government wanted it. They may have been planning to use the case as a groundbreaking one that could scare the online gaming industry after the UIGEA. Up until now, no effort has been made to enforce the UIGEA, but if this case moves forward, it could still send a message that the government is keeping an eye on Internet gambling companies.

The two men were described as processors of illegal gambling transactions in the United States in forfeiture hearings earlier this year. The fact that they were both charged with money laundering, but not held, could mean several things.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland, where the charges were filed, has confirmed to City Paper that the two men were not being held in custody, and that indeed, there has been no court date.

“It could be possible that the two men are cooperating with authorities for the purposes of bringing down others who were involved in this, or other, cases,” said legal analyst Bob Leifly. “If they are helping the government, it is possible that the government is following leads given to them by the two men before they decide whether to move forward with their cases.”

Whenever the first charges resulting from the UIGEA are filed, it is sure to be big news. Although this money laundering scheme is separate from the UIGEA, analysts believe that the government was going to make examples of these two men by releasing the information at their convenience.

Now, however, the public has found out about the charges of Garone and Gourdy, and it should not belong until the rest of the details are leaked. Whether the leak comes from a news agency or the government is the burning question.

Interesting Stats on Winning at Online Gambling

November 5, 2008

The history of gambling industry is as old as human civilization. One reason for this could be that people have always been attracted by the ambiguity, and mystifying scenarios of betting. With the rapid use of Internet, online gambling has gained popularity in no time and today online casinos are a thriving industry. These online casinos are secure, safe to bait, provide lots of fun to practice as well as play interesting games and most importantly they give the users the comfort of playing from their homes.

Just like real gambling, online gambling also requires skills and loads of luck to play. One ought to know the rules and payout policies of the games before trying his luck on that. This article describes the strategies involved in two most popular online games i.e. Slot and Roulette.

Slot is the most preferred game played by the many online gamblers. The advantage of this game is, even with a single betting of as low as $1, you have the opportunity to hit the jackpot! The slot machine is also informally known as a one-armed bandit. This name stems from its appearance and its ability to leave the gamer penniless. The machine typically pays off based on patterns of symbols visible on the front of the machine when it stops. Modern computer technology has resulted in many variations on the slot machine concept. Today, slot machines are the most popular gambling method in casinos and constitute about 70% of the average casinos income. Online casino slot machine are now available to people that want to play slots, but dont want to lose all their money.

By law, the technological specifications generally require a minimum of 80 percent payback. This payout is tested and verified on every machine by an independent testing lab. Most casinos would never stay in business with that low of a payback. Most land casinos set their machines between 88 and 96 percent (payout). The online casino slot machines usually set their payouts at around 97%-99%. In addition, they offer very generous bonuses.

The cool thing about online gambling is that the overhead of the casinos is so small that they can afford to lose money on many of their players. Just make sure youre one of the smart players that always get a deposit bonus. Do that small little thing, and youll be well on your way to being a winner online.

With simple rules and better expected values, Roulette is one of the most popular games. This game has the worst odds available in casino gambling. Gamblers are provided with several sets of colored chips without any value defined on them when they go for buy-in. The value of your chips is calculated based on your buy-in and the number or chips you have received. The house edge is the amount the player loses relative to a bet, on average.

If a casino gambling online player bets on a single number in the American game there is a probability of 1/38 that the player receives 36 times the bet (35 times the bet plus the return of the bet itself), so the house ends up, on average, with a 5.26% edge on each bet. For European roulette the house edge is cut in half, to 2.7%.

Why is this good? Well, lets say that you get a deposit bonus. The deposit bonus is going to be around 100%. 100% is much bigger then the house average. So you can make good money with casino gambling online if you play roulette. You just need to make sure that you get a deposit bonus each time you make a deposit. Thats it! Its that easy.

We have been talking with Mahjong Time for some time and have watched them grow in popularity and have some great successes. We are glad the time is right to work with Mahjong Time and share in those successes.”
The solution will provide the game content in a number of formats. The player can play against the computer or fully interact with the online community. By using the same login credentials as the internet, a player can search for friends who may be playing online via the internet and join the same games and contests as any other internet player, only from their mobile device.

Bingo justice prevails after 13 year legal battle

September 23, 2008

On August 20th in Florida a long drawn-out legal battle over bingo halls finally ended after 13 years, with an Orlando judge ordering Florida’s Attorney General to pay $5.3 million in damages in favour of the bingo halls.

For Gordon Paget, 69, it has been a long legal battle which has taken it’s toll. But for his business partner Philip Furtney the winning judgement has come too late, he died last year aged 69.

In the mid-1990’s, the two businessmen opened a string of bingo halls across Florida in locations such as Kissimmee and Orlando. In 1995 bingo news headlines were made when authorities accused the partners of breaking bingo regulations, and the bingo halls were raided and shut down. The two men were then indicted on racketeering charges by a state grand jury in Orlando.

Furtney spent many weeks imprisoned in the Orange County jail, and was acquitted by a jury in 1999, with authorities dropping charges against his partner Paget. However this didn’t put an end to the legal dispute, with the attorney general’s office pressing for a lawsuit for the bingo businessmen to pay damages.

In 2005 the bingo case went before the Orange County jury again, and was decided in favour of the state. After an appeal, a new trial was finally held in June this year after Furtney’s death 9 months previously.

The final judgement was issued on Aug 20 by Senior Judge Lawrence V. Johnston with his ruling that the Attorney General’s Office had no right to close the bingo halls and seize property, awarding $5.3 million in damages to the bingo hall partners, allbeit postmortem for Furtney.
